Education

There are different kinds of education explored throughout this story- formal schooling, education through family members, education by peers, and education through experience(s). Give examples of how various characters are educated. How are these different types of education important? Is one more important than another? What education do you think is most important for you?

  1. There are diffrent educations learned throughout this book. One education learned is the education Jem and Scout learn in school. Another education learned in this book is the education Aunt Alexandra is trying to teach Jem and Scout. Aunt Alexandra is trying to teach Scout to act like a southern lady and Jem act like a southern gentleman.

  4. I think Atticus is educated by school. I think that because he needed to got to school to learn how to become a lawyer. Another education Atticus has is through family because he teaches his children like thy should be treate for example he doesnt let them do anything bad so that education through family because they help him treat them good

  5. I agree with Alyssa A. But, you forgot to say that Atticus was the one who taught Jem and Scout to read and write. Also, the Ewells only went to school for the first day each year.

  7. I think Atticus is educated, because he is a lawyer he need to study a lot of laws, and he is very polite to everyone, even though the person doesn't polite to him. I think the most important education is polite, because it is a basic attitude for a person.

  9. I think that they get there education mosly from school and also eachother. I thin kthat people spread there nollege between eachother. Also i believe when people get those ideas they add on to it and it just keeps going like that.

  10. Atticus is educated and has a good paying job. The Ewells are not too educated and they are poor. I think it is more important to be educated really well like Atticus than not be educated and not have a job like the Ewells.

  11. One type of education in the book is being formally educated. These people are usually the people like The Finchs or Judge Taylor. These people have jobs in government or high class. This type of education is important because it allows you to be seen and get noticed. Another type of education in the book is being taught by peers. Someone who is more educated in this type of education is the Ewells. I say this because they mostly don’t have a formal education and need to survive with using each other. Another group of people that has peer education is the black community. I say this because they use each other’s experience and formal education. I believe that a combo of all of this education types is important. I say this is because if you have too much of one education, you can get in problems and need the other types to get out. The type of education that is important to me is formal education. This is because in today’s society, you need a formal education to succeed in the world today. This is what is important in the book and what is important to me.

  12. Education is different for every family. For Atticus's family education is very important. He taught the children the importance of education.Although the Ewell family doesn't take education seriously at all.Burris Ewell only goes to school once a year.

  13. Most of the people in the town are racist against blacks and what they say about blacks reflects on their children. Also in the school Jem says that you dont learn anything until you get to 6th grade. The Ewells arent educated.

  14. In To Kill a Mockingbird, many forms of education are described. First of all, some people, like Atticus, have a formal education and are able to use it in their life. Atticus went to school and was educated enough to eventually become a lawyer. Another type of education, which is less useful, is education through peers. Getting an education this way is not as reliable because other people may not have correct information, and they can “brainwash” people with their prejudices, like racism. The type of education which was possibly the most valuable in the time of To Kill a Mockingbird was education through experience. The more situations people have encountered, the better they know how to handle them. Atticus is also a perfect example of this because he knows how to deal with uncomfortable situations, like when Bob Ewell threatened him. In conclusion, there are many types of education shown in To Kill a Mockingbird.

  15. There are a few different types of education. Theres the education Atticus has, the education Aunt Alexandra has, and the education the kids are learning in school. I think that going to school and learning from Atticus will help the kids alot in life. Aunt Alexandra is a very smart person but she should not try to make Scout and Jem something they are not. They should have well manners but they also need to be kids and have fun.

  16. I think that learning from experience is the best way to learn. I think this is because people learn best when they learn from their mistakes. Yes, learning at school and learning form your parents is important, but the best way to learn is by doing it yourself. Stephanie E.

  17. Scout has been educated on the ways of Southern society throughout the trial of Tom Robinson. She has seen, through innocent, unbiased eyes, a black man tell the truth. She saw it for what it was: a sure win for Atticus. She saw two white, if not respectable people, blatantly lie in court, and be believed. And at the end of the trial, she saw a verdict of guilty put on an innocent man. In the past few chapters, Scout has been quickly and harshly educated on the horrors of racism.

  18. There are many forms of education. Atticus has formal education. He educated enough to eventually become a lawyer. Another education is education through peers. Education through peers is usually less reliable. Sometimes through peer information it gets changed every time it is passed around. These types of educations are important because you get informed of what is happening.

  19. I think in scouts cas the educaion she is getting at home is just as important as the one she is getting from school. This is so because the things Atticus teaches her and Jem about life is really valubale information and it is just as important as the schooling.

  20. There are many different types of education, and all are important in their own ways. Formal education is where one usually learns about acedemics. Family education may also teach one acedemics, but usually family costums and traditions. Your peers teach you about how the world works and what you have to do to be successful. Personal experiences can teach you all of these things, and more. Most of the time, personal experiences teach more than you would learn in years of the other different types of education. The only difficult part with your personal experiences is that it can affect you for your entire life and you usually do not get a chance to fix your mistake.
Atticus does have a formal education since he is a lawyer. He also learned alot from his personal experiences, which helped make him who he was. Jem had some formal education, but learned from Atticus too, and alot from his experience. Scout didn't learn from her formal education, but she learned a lot from Atticus and even more from her personal experiences, such as with Tom Robinson

  21. There are many different kinds of education throughout the story. Jem and Scout go to school, but Atticus teaches them at home also. The Ewells go to school the first day and then never go back. It’s important to go to school, but it’s also good if friends or family teach you as well. Another way is when Aunt Alexandra tries to teach Jem and Scout by being a good child. Atticus is educated by school because he had to go to school to become a lawyer. In conclusion, education is different for each family.

  22. There are many different kinds of education through this book. Calpurnia for example, teaches Scout and Jem about being civil and doing the right thing. Like when Walter came over, Scout commented on his use of syrup in his food. Cal brought her inside the kitchen and told her to apologize to him. But, some people in this book went to school, like Atticus. Education all in all is important, but I think it is good to learn from school as well as figures in your life who inspire you, like Calpurnia and Scout.

  23. I think that in this book there are many diffrent types of education. For example, some kids get educated at school like Scout and Jem but others like Atticus got home schooled. Also blacks during that time usually did not get educated however cal does. In conclusion I belive that there are many diffrent types of education throughout this book, but it really depends whats the charicters personality is that defines why they have that kind of education like the ewells for example they could go to school but they dont because of there lifestyle.

  25. There are indeed many types of education. One type is the education that Scout and Jem receive from school that educates them, but the way that the school district seemed appropriate. That is why in the beginning of the book Miss Caroline Fisher got mad at Scout because she could already read, even though she wasn’t supposed to be able to. But this education also helps get a job later in life. If Attticus didn’t have a good education he may have never been a lawyer. Another type of education is the one Atticus gives to his children. He teaches them the correct values to use in life. Also, Calpurnia gives Scout the education of good manners in front of others and how to behave when guests are over. The last type of education is the type that Aunt Alexandra gives to Scout. She teaches her how to be a lady by making her wear dresses and behaving “ladylike”.

  26. There are many different types of educatin throughout this book. Not only do Jem and Scout learn through school but they learn through Calpurnia and Atiicus. Calpurnia teaches them about keeping their place and having mannors. One example of this is when Walter Cunningham came over and Scout was being rude and Calpurnia said "any company is company." and told Scout to mind her mannors. Also Calpurnia teaches them that they don't always need to show all they know one example of this is when they are at the black people church and Calpurnia talks witha different dialect, and says they don't always have to show all that they know. Scout and Jem learn from Atticus because he teaches them wrong and right like when Scout came hoem saying the n* word and Atticus told her that she should not insult people by using that language. Those are only some of the examples of education in this book.

  27. There are many diffrent types of educated people in this novel. For one, Atticus and Uncle Jack went to college. Atticus became a lawyer and Uncle Jack became a doctor. Aunt Alexandra, also in their family, did not go to college but seems to be somewhat educated. Then there is Jem and Scout and Dill. They are gettting a good education now and can go to college. Then the people like Cal and Zeebo who weren't allowed to go to school got educated from the white people. Specificly, Miss Maudie's grandmother taught Cal how to read and then taught Zeebo how to read. Then there are the Ewells who aren't educated really at all. The only people that are educated in that family is Mayella and Bob. Finally there are the blacks who really aren't wanted to be educated. Matt D.

  28. There are many different types of education showed in To Kill a Mockingbird. There is school education that Scout and Jem get. Also, Atticus teaches Jem and Scout about politics and taught them how to write and read faster then the school did. Another type of education Jem and Scout get is from Aunt Alexandra because she tries to make them into a young lady and young gentleman. I think that the education that Atticus gives them is the most important. I think this because he teaches them about real life and basic things you should know.

  29. Education is an essential theme in this story, shown in different ways, with a variety of characters. Characters such as Dill and Dolphus Raymond are educated in a sense of street smarts, and they know their place in the world, and how to escape situations that they do not want to be in. Raymond wants the self image of having colored friends and being the town drunk. While this is odd, that is what he wants, and so he achieves this through pretending to be drinking alcohol, which offends the wealthy white townspeople. Dill is smart because he always know what to do in a situation outside of school. He knows how to have a good time, and how to escape to consequence of doing so. This makes him educated, even though he may not get good grades in school.

  30. There are many different types of education in the to Kill a Mockingbird. For instance characters such as Atticus are taught mainly by book smarts, while characters such as Dill are educated mainly by street smarts. An example of this was when Mrs. Maudie’s house was on fire and Dill, Jem, and Scout had snuck into the crowd when Atticus asked were Jem’s pants were. Jem and Scout did not know what to say but Dill stepped in and said that they were playing strip poker with matches. Jem and Scout on the other hand are not just educated by going to school but they also learn manners and discipline from Atticus and Calpurnia. This is another type of educaton. Each type of education is just as equally as useful as the other and are all good types of education to have.

  31. There are so many ways people get educated in this book. One way is how Jem and Scout go to school and get educated there. Another way is all the stories they hear from different people. Those are a few ways people get educated in this book.

  32. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird there is much evidence of education. The simplest idea of education is as broad as the social standers of the town. This is viewed perfectly with Little Chuck Little though he may not appear to be very intelligent with the confines of a schools atmosphere he is brilliant with the pastures of his farmland. On the other hand Scout is very intellectual in school but knows not of the world around her. Then there is Atticus who ties all the loose ends of all educational barriers with his broad educational background.

  33. In the book to kill a mockingbird education was shown in various ways. In the black community most of the people could not read or write. Except for a few like Calpurnia she was taught to read and write when she was little and trhe helped Atticus teach Jem and Scout how to read. Education is importnant because you know what is going on around you. You can read the newspapers, and books which helps you learn more and then you can get a good job and make lots of money. I think all education is important to me because themore you know the better the job, the better the job the more money and your life is better.
