Appearances vs. Reality

Which characters and/or events do we see initially in one light only to later realize the reality of the situation?

  1. Boo Radley Because At first he seemed like some weirdo who ate small animals for fun, but in the end, he just wanted to be cared for.

  2. boo was seen as a crazy cat eater when he gave gifts and was nice. tom was seen as a rapist but was really a kind man incapable of that crime.

  3. Mr. Raymond was first seen as a pitiful drunk who lived in a black area. Everyone would've hated him if it werent for his drinking problem. Which we now learn he does not have! He has to drink to live there and hide himself behind his fake drinking problem.

  4. Scout because she didn't really realize what was going on in the trial. Also when Aunt Alexandra and Atticus were fighting she thought it was about her but later found out it was about Calpurnia.

  6. I think Mr. Raymond because everyone sees him as a drunk and he only pretends to be drunk so that he will not be judged that he goes to see the blacks.

  7. Boo Radly was an example of a character that we saw in one light in the begining of the book and a differnt towards another part of the book. In the begining of the book we thought he was some scary man who never came out of his house. But we later found out that he is a footwashing baptist, which means anything they do to enjoy is a sin. So his parents wouldnt let him go out. Also he is really nice because he rapped the towel around Jem when there was the fire.

  11. Boo Radley was we see inittially in one light only to later realize the reality of the situation, because at the beginning everybody thinks he is a dangerous person, he eats row animals, and the teeth are yellow. But he just wants people to notice him.

  12. One character we see in one light is Mayella Ewell because she is a Ewell, but during the trial we see that she is different and isn’t like the rest of the Ewells.

  13. I agree with Jordan. Boo Radley is a character that at first everyone thought was bad and scary in the beginning of the book. However later on in the book we found out that he really was a nice person and helped a lot of people out.

  14. We see many appearances that you would never think they would act the way they do act. For example, Boo Radley is like this because he was described by two different people and to the kids he sounds so scary but he was actually nice. Like when he put the blanket on Scout when it was freezing out and they were watching the house burn, also how he put the candy and toys and everything in the tree for the kids. Another person who is like this is Dolphus Raymond. He is like this because he wears these English cowboy boots and chaps and all this rich, nice stuff but he married a black person and had to put a brown paper bag on his coke to make it look like alcohol just so he could marry who he wanted to and blame it on the alcohol. He would rather be shown as an alcoholic than have racism go around for him because he’s white and he married a black woman and had mixed children. Those are a few people whose appearances, aren’t like their reality.

  15. I agree with Scott P. because nobody respected him because of his apperance and not the realitty of his personality. Witch if they looked at his personality they would see that he did not rape mayella

  16. Boo Radley seemed a little strange in the beginning of the book. His personality seems to have followed with his actions in the beginning. For example: He ate squirrles and cats.Thats a little weird and gross. His teeth were very yellow, and his house looked like a dump.As we read on throughout the book he seemed to be a nice, helful person.

  17. One character we see in one light is Mayella Ewell because she is a Ewell, but during the trial we see that she is different and isn’t like the rest of the Ewells. Also because she grows flowers and takes care of them. She also saves up her money to buy her siblings ice cream. That is why I think we see Mayella in a different light.

  18. We see Boo Radley differently then we did in the beginning. In the beginning of the book we saw Boo as a crazy, cat-eating, and possibly a murderer with yellow teeth. However, as the book goes on, he becomes a nicer person. When Scout falls asleep outside, Boo gave her a blanket so that she wouldn’t be too cold. He turns out ton be a caring, kind, and all-around sweet person.

  19. Almost every charecter in the book is seen from different points of veiws. I think the three bigest people seen as they really are not is Mayella Ewell, Boo Radley, and Mr. Raymond. Mayella is taken as tras just for being a Ewell, but then you see she cares about how she apears and how she takes care of her flowers. Boo Radley was seen as a crazy person who was to be feared, but then you see he is careing person. Mr. Raymond is a bit different because he makes people see him as something different. When you first meet him you think he is a drunk, but really he just pretends to be that way so people can have a reason as to why he would be around black people.

  20. The character Mr.Dolphus Raymond was a different person than anybody expected.People thought that he was drinking whisky, but he was really drinking coca-cola.Appearances are sometimes disseaving, don't trust them.

  21. I think Boo Radley is a good example of this because at first the kids thought that he was mean and strange but, he is actually really kind and caring. One example of this is when he put the blanket on Scout.

  22. I thick that Boo is one of the most stereotyped person in the book. This is because he is looked to be feared, and a harmful person. But all he really tries to do is help people.

  23. There are two examles of when I couldn't understand something when I first read it but later understood it. First is the Linch mob. I couldn't understand why all those people were after Tom. Later I learned that they were there to kill him. The second thing is that Boo Radley was the one putting the presents in the tree. I thought that someone was hiding items there and they just kept finding them. These are the two situations that I was unsure about at first, but later figured out.

  24. Mr.Dolphus Raymond was first known as a crazy alcoholic who would always hang around black people because he didnt know what he was doing, he was always drunk. It may seem this way, but actually,he is not a drunk. Whenever he is drinking out if his paper bag, it is coca-cola. The reason why he acts like he is drinking alchohol and like he is always drunk is so people do not think of him as extremely different for enjoying the company of colored people as opposed to whites.

  25. I saw Mayella in a diffrent way in the beging of the trial. I thought that she was like all the other Ewells but she really is not. She is alot cleaner and more responsible. Also I thought that she would know not to let her father rape her but when she testifies she says that "what my daddy does to me don't count". I think this shows that she has been raped by her father and does not know better then to let her dad rape her. I thought that Mayella was like the other Ewelle's but she is not. I also thought that Mayella knew better then to let her dad rape her but she does not.

  26. We see Dolfus Raymond and Boo Radley differently until we learn more about them. At first Raymond was seen as a drunk, crazy, guy, who married a black woman. When Dill and Scout talked to Mr. Raymond we learned that he wasn’t an alcoholic, he was a nice man who didn’t care about race. In the beginning of the story Boo was thought to be a psychotic man, who was locked up in his house because he was crazy. Jem later realizes that he chooses to stay in his house because he doesn’t want to be a part of the cruel world outside his house. These two people may come across as crazy, but have a lot more to their stories when they are listened to.

  27. Dolphus Raymond is a character that we later see has a different side to him. He doesn’t appear to be who he is. Everyone thinks he is a guy who drinks out of a sack all day long and that he is a bad influence and ironically he is a white man. But later we find out that he doesn’t drink instead in the sack its coca-cola. He wants everyone to think that he is a drinker because he doesn’t want to be ridiculed for being married to a black woman. So Dolphus makes up this image of being a drinker so he can distract everyone from the fact that he is married to a black woman.

  28. One character that we see initially in one light and we later realize the reality is Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Dubose definitely fits in this answer because the Finch children viewed her as a terrible racist that only talked non-sense. We later realized that Atticus had a different view on her, and put himself in her shoes. She’s had a hard past and she sure does judge people but it’s for certain reasons. She’s completely against black people and totally disagrees with Atticus but he somehow knows what she means. This is one character that has a reality different than their appearance.

  29. I think we see right through Boo Radley in the beggining. The children and Miss Stephanie make him seem like this monster that lives under the steps. I am sure that this is not the real case and we will soon find out who the real Boo Radley is. RJ M

  30. Mayella Ewell is seen differently after you realize how her home life is like. In the beginning you think she is as bad as the rest of the Ewells but then you realize that she cares about her reputation and she tries to keep clean. You also learn that she is very lonely. It kind of goes back and forth with how you think about her. In one chapter you will feel bad for her because of the way her father treats her and the way she has to live, but then in the next, you start to feel angry towards her because she is lying to the jury and Tom will be found guilty because of this.

  31. I think that people miss judged Tom Robinson just because he is black which seems very unfair. He is really just a kind young man trying to keep himself out of trouble. Also everyone sees Dolphus Raymond as a drunk and strange man. He has 2 different sides to him. He really isnt that weird he just pretends to be so he wont be hated for marrying a black woman.

  33. Mr.Raymond is a person who you hear bad things about but as the story goes on you get to know the real reasons behind his actions. He lets people believe that he is an alcoholic when really he is just drinking coco-cola most of the time. He knows that this will allow people to leave him alone about him living with a black woman and having mixed children. People see being an alcoholic as an excuse for a white person to enjoy the company of black people. Mr.Raymond just wants to be left alone about his choice to live with the blacks.

  35. In the book Tom Robinson was deffinetly missread by the people of Maycomb. When Mayella accused Tom of the rape everyone immediatly agreed without knowing what exactly happened, just because hes black. However as we all know it wasnt Tom who raped Mayella it was sorta the other way around. Mayella just accused Tom so she didnt have to feel guilty about likeing and kissing a black man. I think the jury and the audience both know who is really the guilty one of the crime.

  36. What we think we know about Dolphus Raymond is that he is a drunk and he lives with blacks. Everyone thinks he only lives with them is because he is drunk all the time. However, we learn that he really doesnt drink much. He normally has coca cola with him. He acts drunk so people have an excuse to say why he lives with blacks. The appearance of Dolphus Raymond isn't actually what it appears to be.

  37. I think that Dolphus Raymond is seen differently than he really is. This is because when fellow citizens see him, they think that he's a drunk who likes black people because he's always drunk. But underneath Mr. Raymond's appearence he is really a rich man, not a drunk, and really is more comfortable around black people. -Jordi H.

  38. I think Tom Robinson&Boo Radley are.Everyone sees Tom Robinson as this mean hurtful black man who only wants to hurt women& steal things from people. He is actually a very nice guy who respects people and he tried to help Mayella and he feels bad for her. Everyone thinks that it is so bad because he feels bad for her. They think that it is weird for a black man to feel sorry for a white woman. Also, Boo Radley is not seen for who he really is. People think of him as some huge weirdo who never comes out of the house, but he really is a nice guy. He is not trying to harm people, he just needs to be cared for. Stephanie E.

  39. I think that people miss judged Tom Robinson because he is black which is really unfair. He is just a polite gentlman who thought he was just going to do mayella a favor, and it all got blown up in his face. Also people see Dolphus Raymond as a drunk and a weird man. They think this because he is married to a black woman and has mixed children. That's not fair bacause he is a normal man just trying to live a happy life. He just prefers black people and there is nothing wrong with that. Although, he make's himself out to be a jrunk so that people won't make fun of him for marrying a black woman. I think that is cowardly because he is scared of what people will do if they found out that he was in his right mind and still preferd blacks.

  40. Looking back to when the linching mob event happened the people were all just drunk and riled up to do something. Even though they wanted to kill Tom Robinson if you see past that part of them you will see people who will might help Atticus in the trial.

  41. One person that we see their story change is Dill. Dill said that he visits his aunt for the summer and that he lives with his mom. He pretends how everyone likes dill. During the reading you can assume that he is being moved around by all his relatives. One night dill was hiding under Scout’s bed. Then Scout sees him and he says he’s not going back to his house. He said that no one showed him attention and he doesn’t like his stepdad. Scout found this hard to believe because she’s always getting attention from her family.

  42. There are many characters in the book To Kill a Mockingbird that are initially seen and one light but later the reality of the situation is found. Mr. Dolphus Raymond seemed like a drunken man who drank whiskey out of a coca cola bottle in a bag and who could not help being with blacks and living with blacks. In reality, as Dolphus Raymond himself told Scout and Dill, he actually drinks coca cola out of the bottle and likes being with blacks. He only pretends to be drunk all of the time because it is easier for people to believe and accept. Also, according to Mrs. Stephanie Crawford, Boo killed animals for fun and was scary and mean. In reality, Boo was actually a nice man. He put in gifts in the hole in the tree for Jem and Scout and he put a blanket around Scout when she was cold.

  43. In the book, Dill was a different person than Scout and Jem thought he was. He made up stories to get attention, like when he said his father was the owner of a railroad (chapter 4; page 36) and that he was locked up by his parents in the basement but escaped. In fact, Dill’s parents loved him, but he ran away from home because they didn’t pay much attention to him. Another person who was really different than everybody thought was Dolphus Raymond. Everybody thought that he lived with the black people because he was always drunk and didn’t know any better. However, he lived like that because he wanted to. In fact, he didn’t even ever drink whiskey, just Coca-Cola.

  44. There are some characters from To Kill a Mockingbird that are initially seen in one light but later the reality of the situation is realized. First, Mr. Dolphus Raymond is seen as a crazy drunk man living with the black society. Many people say that he drinks whiskey out of a coca cola bottle in a bag. They also say that he was supposed to marry one of the Spencer ladies but was caught having an affair with a colored woman. The reality was that he was really drinking coca cola, and that he wanted to live with the blacks because he liked their way of living. Although many people judge people on appearance you should get to know someone’s true identity before spreading stories about them.

  45. At first Dolphous Raymond was seen as a drunk who was married to a black woman. He was seen as a drunk because he always drank out of a brown paper bag. The reality of this was that he really did just drink coke out of the bag but he used this to cover up for marrying a black woman. Tom Robinson was first seen as a bad person for raping Mayella. But after many people heard the trial they weren’t as convinced he was guilty. A third person that was seen differently was Dill. He told everyone that his dad worked on the railroad and that he and his dad were going to build a boat and go fishing. The truth was that his parents bought him whatever he wanted so that he would go play and leave them alone.

  46. A character we initially see in one light only to later realize the reality of the situation is Calpurnia. This is because at first you see her as being a very smart, proper, respected lady. Later you see her at church and she isn’t talking proper and acting like a lady. She acts worse then she is to try to fit in. In conclusion Calpurnia is a character that we initially see in one light only to later realize the reality of the situation.

  47. Tom Robinson is a good example of a person who was seen differently in the end than he was initially seen. At first, Tom seemed like a criminal who raped an innocent person. During the trial though, we heard Tom’s testimony and understood that he was a good person and did not commit the crime. He sounded more innocent than Mayella, and there was enough evidence to prove him innocent. Tom also had a wife and kids, and was a very hard worker. He also was very kind to Mayella, and helped her with her work because of her hard life. Tom was actually a kind, honest person who never did anything wrong.

  48. When we first meet Mrs. Dubose in the story she comes off as a “hate the world” kind of women. By this I mean she seems to hate to be around people and the only thing she seemed to enjoy was putting people down like Scout and Jem. But this point of view changes when we later find out that she was addicted morphine. This showed us that although she was still rude and spoke down to Scout and Jem she was a strong willed and a determined person to try to give the morphine up and be free of it before she died. One other thing that she appeared to be was that the she seemed to not want a lot of company because she always scared away her company. But this changed when she asked jem to read to her. This showed that she actually was lonely and wanted some company.

  49. There were two characters which were seen in two lights. One of these is Mr. Dolphus Raymond, who wanted to be seen as a drunk so he would not be ostrasized from the community because he liked to be in the blacks' company instead of whites. Another one is Mrs. Dubose, which the neighborhood kids saw as the mean old grumpy lady from nextdoor. But Atticus then tells the kids why Jem had to read to her until the alarm clock went off, and the Finch children realized that she was just trying to wane herself off of morphine, and that she was very bold and courageos for trying to do that right before she passed.

  50. I hink Mr. Dolphus Raymond changed the most throughout the book. Everyone always saw him as a drunk guy who liked blacks more than whites. At the end, Jem and Scout found out that Dolphus pretended to be always drunk so people didn't think he was crazy to live among blacks. If they knew it was coke, they'd think he was very crazy. But since everyone thinks he is drunk, they think that he can't help it since he is in "whiskey's grasp."

  51. One example of Appearance VS Reality is Dylan. He claims to be a well loved kid with a wonderful family. He says his dad buys and does all sorts of things for him. In reality he is actually very upset about how his parents tend to ignore and avoid spending time with him. Another example is Mr. Raymond. He makes every one believe his a drunken man who loves spending time with black people. He actually only drinks Coke from a sack. He purposely creates this illusion so he can be left alone. A final example is Boo Radley. He is originally portrayed as some kind of monster that stalks and haunts people. The reality is he is a kind old man that enjoys helping out Scout and Jem.

  52. Some characters in To Kill a Mockingbird have appearances that are different from whom they really are. For example Mrs. Lafayette Dubose appears to be a mean old lady, but actually she is sick; she was addicted to morphine pain-killers. Jem was complaining about how he used to have to read to her, but Atticus says “[Ms. Dubose] was the bravest person I ever known.” Mr. Dolphus Raymond acts like a drunk, but is actually very sober. He is married to a black woman and he says, “Some folks don’t- like the way I live. Now I could say the hell with ‘em.” To stop from being judged he drinks Coke and pretends it is Whiskey.

  53. Boo Radley was seen as a scary person who ate animals and such. People also thought that he looked in others windows at night. He is actually a nice person. When Scout was cold he gave her a blanket. He also gave Jem and Scout the gifts that were in the knob. He wants to play with the children but he is not allowed to. Another person is Mr. Raymond. People think that he is a drunk because he is always drinking but he is actually drinking Coca Cola. People think he’s weird because he lives with the black people, but he wants to live there. Those are two people who are misjudged.

  55. Dolphus Raymond is someone that we see initially in one light but later realize the reality of the situation. He is like this because he acts as if he is a drunk but in reality, he is only drinking coke. He acts like this because he wants to give people a good reason to talk about him. 57. Mr. Dolphus Raymond was known as the town drunk that beats his half black half white children, but actually he is not a drunk and doesn’t beat his kids! He just made up the Whole thing! He drinks coke-a-cola out of a bag so it looks like it is boos! Another character who we saw in one light but now see in another one is Dill. He said so many lies like “I saw twenty picture shows” and “ My dad and I are going to build a boat this summer” when actually none of that happened! He ran away from his new home because he though this parents did not love him anymore! He was also an orphan! He told these lies to cover up his past! Lastly, in the beginning of the book we all thought Boo was going to be an awful monster, but as we read we are finding out he is actually becoming a very nice man! We are learning so many new things about the Characters in this book!

  58. Originally, Dolphus Raymond was seen as a drunk that was married to a black woman because he was too drunk to know better. Later in the story, we find that Dolphus actually wasn’t a drunk; he was drinking coca cola the whole time. Dolphus later tells that he told people that he was a drunk so that he wouldn’t be bothered by them for having a black wife. Dolphus is actually just a man who follows his consensus, but is not very courageous because he never wanted to admit that he actually loved his wife.

  59. I believe Mrs. Dubose and Mr. Dolphus Raymond are both characters that we see in one light, but then see what they are really like. Mrs. Henry Dubose is first seen as a mean old woman that enjoys harassing anyone that walks past her yard. We see this when she criticizes first Atticus for taking Tom Robinson’s case, and when she tells Scout to act more like a lady. But later on after her death, we learn about her morphine pain killer addiction, and how in the last month before her death, she was off it. This shows us she has the courage to go through that painful experience before she dies, and we gain more respect for her. Mr. Dolphus Raymond is first seen as a “misfit” who is a drunk and lives with the blacks, the lower class of society. But then we learn that he only pretends to drink, and is really only drinking Coke. It is easier for society to understand why he chooses to live with the blacks, and marry a black woman, if they think of him as a drunk. He hates the mistreatment of blacks, and wishes to isolate himself from the racist whites. Raymond is really a good man, who is unprejudiced, but forced to act as an outsider.

  60. I think it is interesting that it first sounds great to have parents who will buy you anything you want and to have all of the latest and best new toys. However, when you stop and take a look at Dill, he is so lonely and sad and sensitive. His parents tried to use toys to get rid of him so that they can spend time together alone. It must have been so painful for him to be pushed aside by his mom and new dad and to know that they were not interested in him. That broke my heart!
When Dill cries at Mr. Gilmer's treatment of Tom Robinson, we see how sensitive and caring Dill is, and how he is able to see and understand things from Tom's perspective. I wish his parents had seen his situation from his perspective and paid more attention to him.
Dolphus Raymond points out that as we grow up and experience more cruelty in the world we become more insensitive to it and we become accustomed to seeing others in pain. He tells the kids that "only children weep." I hope that is not true.

    Great blogging!

  61. At first Dolphus Raymond seems like a drunk who will never change his ways. But eventually we discover that he lives the way he does because he wants to, and because that’s how he is comfortable. Dill, at fist glance, seems like the luckiest kid alive. His dad’s the conductor of a train, he’s got happy parents that will buy him anything he asks for, but when he runs away to see Scout and Jem, we learn his parents don’t care about him. They’re never around to play with him or comfort him when he’s sad. Boo Radley was a man who scared the children a lot. They were so frightened by him they would run past his house, but only if they had to pass it in the first place. But then, they start finding gifts from him in the tree. They discover that all he wants if someone to care for him. People are often different than what they seem at first glance.

  63. A person in this book who has one appearance but in reality is different would be for example Mr. Dolphous Raymond. Everyone seems to think that he is an alcoholic and is a bad person, which is why in the book Jem Scout knew that they should not be around him when they came out from the trial. But they learned that he was actually not an alcoholic at all but drank coke in a liquor bottle. Another instance of this would be from Boo Radley who everyone seems to think is vicious and bad, until Jem and Scout find gifts under his tree and find that all he wants is someone to care for him. Another instance of this would be Dill. He seems to be so lucky with parents who love him and a step father who wants to do stuff with him but actually feels very lonely as Jem and Scout find when he runs away from his home to their house and says that his parents don’t care for him. These are just some instances of how people seem different at first, but in reality things are much different then they appear.

  64. In To Kill a Mockingbird, several characters are different from how they initially appear. First of all, Mrs. Dubose was originally viewed only as a mean old woman who tormented Scout and Jem. Later, though, it was discovered (with the help of Atticus) that she was actually a very courageous lady who overcame a strong addiction. Another character who is perceived differently as the book goes on is Dolphus Raymond. Maycomb's general consensus about him is that he is a foolish man who lives with the black community because he is drunk. However, Scout learned that Dolphus was only drinking Coca-Cola and he wasn't much of a drinker; he just liked the black community better. A final character who appears to be different from how they truly are is Atticus. While he was always seen as a wise man, Atticus did not appear to be very brave until he stood in front of the jail to protect Tom Robinson. Once more, there are many characters in To Kill a Mockingbird who are not really the way they appear.

  65. This book is filled with people and events that aren’t as they appear. For example Heck Tate’s mob outside the finch’s house looked like a harmful and dangerous gang. In reality though, it was the opposite. The gang was only trying to protect Atticus and inform him he might be in danger. Another time we see this is with Boo Radley. He first appears to be an evil man with millions of rumors about him peeping in window and eating cat. However he we realize these rumors aren’t true when Scout and Jem find all of the treasures in the tree by Boo Radleys house. In this book there is always two sides to every story.

  66. Many charecters are seen one way but then we see there true colors. One example of this is Boo Radley. At first he is seen as a crazy man who killed his father. Later on in the book we see that he is just gentle and caring person. One example of this is when he covers Scout in the blanket when she is outside ,another example of this is when they find the gifts inside of the tree trunk. Another charecter that we see in different "lights" is Dolphus Raymond at first he is seen as a drunk man, but in reality he is just drinking coke and he would rather have people talk about him because he is a drunk rather than the fact that he lives with black people

  67. There are many main characters we see differently now. They are Boo Radley and Dolfus Raymond. To start off Boo was thought to be a psychotic man, who was locked up in his house because he was crazy. But once you get to know him isnt. At first Raymond was seen as a drunk, crazy, guy, who married a black woman. Then you realize that he isn’t at all.

  68. There are two main characters we see differently as the story goes on. Boo Radley is thought to be a dangerous evil man, but in reality is kind an average. At first the rumors in the book cause us to think that Boo is a terrible convict, but later we see him make gifts for Jem and Scout. A second person we see change thoughout the story is Dolfus Raymond. Dolfus convinced everyone that he was a alcoholic. But the story soon reveals that the drunk image is just a mask. We learn much more about Dolfus Raymond throughout the strory.

  69. Mayella Ewell is someone that we see initially in one light but later realize the reality of the situation. At first everyone thinks she is cruel and mean, but at the trial Tom Robinson tells the truth about her. She was actually very kind, but was in a tough situaintion.
