Dolphis Raymond comes from a very rich family on top of the social ladder and expects to marry a white woman and live in a beautiful mansion. Instead Dolphis Raymond departs from his rich family and marries a black woman and has children with which puts him on the bottom of the social ladder. citykid215
I think Aunt Alexandra believes that the finches are better than everybody so she thinks she is the best. She always says that scout and Jem disgrace the family name GreenBay 218
Many characters families determine their place in society. For example the Cunninghams are lower in society than many other people. Scout likes Walter Cunningham, but because of his family’s position on the social ladder many people don’t respect them. When Scout said she would want to invite Walter over Aunt Alexandra said that they are not their kind of people, and she would not allow it. Another example is that Aunt Alexandra wants Jem and Scout to live up to the Finch name. Dolphus Raymond is an example of someone who departed from their family’s expectations. He was from a respectable family, but then he married a black woman and had children who are now mixed, which out him lower down the social ladder.
Many characters’ lives are a result of their family background. For example, most members of the Finch family act very classy and the women are all ladylike. Aunt Alexandra takes after this tradition, and tries to raise Scout and Jem the way she has been. Unfortunately, Aunt Alexandra sometimes teaches the children things that are immoral, like racism, and hurts their feelings. Unlike Aunt Alexandra, Atticus does not go along with the Finch family history. He believes that black people should be treated fairly, that Scout doesn’t have to be too ladylike (the way Alexandra wants her to be), and has other just feelings. In conclusion, not everyone goes along with their family expectations.
Family’s ancestry plays a large role to determine people’s places in society. In the town of Maycomb, your family is judged and rendered based on the raking of your ancestors. If your ancestor was a well liked, hard working people, then you were expected to live up to that name. There are multiple examples of this in the book. One would be the Ewells. The Ewell’s, in Atticus words, were “the disgrace of Maycomb” and had no expectations of attending school or even showering daily. Everybody viewed the Ewells in that way, just because of their ancestors’ poor reputation. People like Aunt Alexandra believe in something referred to as a caste system. For example :No Crawford minds his own business, every third Merriweather is morbid, the truth is not in the Delafields, and all the Bufords walk like that are many different ways that that Aunt Alexandra sees people in Maycomb. Xohappinessxo422
Ancestry and family plays a big role in racism.Often times if one family member is racist it is quite common that the whole family will adapt to that thought. For example Aunt Alexandra is very racist, her son Francis also is very racist.
In this book, there a couple family backgrounds that help determine their place in society. The Cunninghams have had a family trend of being a group of poor farmers who have a low place in society. They have been farming the same land for many years and have no intentions of terminating this occupation. Their children such as Walter Cunningham have tried to go to school, but end up flunking out because they have to help their parents with the crops and don’t have time to achieve in their academic work. Jem departs form family expectations because Aunt Alexandra says she is not lady like and is a disgrace to the Finch family name.
Nicole A. you are correct that if your parents of anybody close to you is racist that you would most likely turn out racist. It would be like it was part of your DNA.
The Finch’s and Ewell’s family backgrounds help determine their places in society. The Finch family’s background determined their place in society because they were all well educated, have good jobs, and own Finch’s landing. I think Atticus broke away from the family expectations, because of the way he raises Jem and Scout. He treats Jem and Scout as adults and Aunt Alexandra and their other relatives believe that they should be treated as children. They also believe that Scout should be raised as a lady instead of being allowed to play with Jem and Dill. The Ewell’s family background also determines their place in society because none of the Ewell’s has been educated. This places the Ewell’s as low class people. Chicle406
The Ewell children's family backround helps determine their places in society. This is because since the people of Maycomb think that the Ewells live in trash, that there all trashy. The people think that the Ewell children will end up like their parents, dirty, poor, and alchoholics.
The Ewells family history shows an example of this. Everyone in the town thinks that the Ewells are all dirty, poor and rude people. They try to avoid them the most that they can, and tehir decisoin is mostly based on Bob Ewell's behaivor. However, Mayella Ewell tries to stay clean and think about her reputation more than the other Ewells. Kirsten E.
Mayella Ewell's life is very much determined by her family. Her father beats her and her whole family is disgusting. However, Ms. Mayella Ewell is trying to be as normal as possible. She showed up at court actually looking somewhat clean and presentable. Her family doesn't really care about how they look or what people think of them. She is at least a little bit normal. If she grew up in any other family, she would have been much different. Jake D.
The Finch’s family are very wealthy people so they are high up in the society. The person who departs from the family is Atticus. He departs from the family because his view on black people is that they are human just like us, and he disagrees with the views that others have on them. The Finch family completely disagrees with Atticus and thinks he’s a shame to have as part of their family. He’s just standing up for what he thinks is right and deserves some credit. That’s how Atticus departs from the family’s expectations. heyitsmex601
I believe that Dolphus Raymond does not follow he way that his family did. For example he comes from a rich white family, and now he has a poor inter-racial family. Also I believe that Aunt Alexndra thinks that Atticus is bringing shame to the name Finch. This is because he is defending a black man in court and Alexandra believes that isn't right.
The Ewell family is definetly determined their place in society. Like it said in the beginning of the book about school, the Ewells had gone on like this for decades. They only went to school the first day of each year, because thats all they ever needed to go. The truancy officer thought that if she got them each in on the first day, that her job was done. Decades and generations back, the Ewells probably lived the same way too. They lived in a trashy and dumby area with garbage lying around and were dirty people too. tara g.
Atticus's family does not determine how he thinks or looks at all. His sister is very racist and wants the children to grow up like everyone else. Atticus on the other hand is not racist and stands up for what he believes in. He doesn't follow everybody else like Aunt Alexandra does. He doesn't care if Scout is a tomboy because he thinks that everybody is different in their own way. As long as you have good manners and are polite to others, you can believe in anything you want. Jake D.
The Ewell family's background deffinetly explains their place in society. Everyone of Maycomb knows that the Ewells are just very dirty, poor, and careless people. The family has about 7 kids and the father, Robert Ewell, does not work and when the goverment gives them money he just drinks it away. Also the Ewell family has a reputation about only going to school for the first day of the year, and their truancy officer feels lucky to get them in on that first day. Another huge part of their repuation is being so dirty! They dont have enough money for food so they go to their nearby dump and eat the scaps out of that. The only exception from their family is Mayella. The people of Maycomb realize she really wants to be different from her family. She trys to stay as clean as possible by showering. Also she keeps a small patch of perfect red roses that she grows on the side of the house and she waters them every day. To me I think Mayella really wishes she didnt accuse Tom because she really loves him.
There are many families that think they are better than the rest. Aunt Alexandra thinks she is better than everyone. She tells Jem and Scout that the disgrace the family name. The Ewells are at the bottom because they are so poor. The Radleys are in the middle. They aren’t poor or rich, they are in the middle. Dolphus Raymond comes from a rich family, but he marries a black woman and that puts him at the bottom of the social ladder. -liveplaysoftball826
Scouts family’s background determined her place in Society. Because, Scout is a Finch; and therefore, she is expected to be one of though women described in the beginning of the book; with all of the powder and the fancy dresses. She brake away from this image when she prefers to act more like a boy instead of a fancy lady. Also she want to work when she gets older which is also something high society women like Aunt Alexander does not do.
The cunninghams, the Finches, and the Attkinsons are a good family. What determines a good family is that the family has been around for many generations and has not had " a touch of negro blood" in it. The exceptions to this rule are the Ewells because they are poor. Also, their father is a drunk. -Dana Grindall
In all reality no family truly deservers to have their family names determine their place in society however certain families such as the Ewells and the Finches places are already set. Unfortunately the Ewels place is set to be the poor and uneducated family of Maycomb. The closest any one has ever come to braking barriers was Mayella. She almost spoke up agents her own father in court but back down in the last minute framing Tom Robinson. Also the Finches and placed highly in society. This is good for people like Atticus and Aunt Alexandra but for Scout it is murder. All she wants to do is have fun and live her life to the fullest but cannot do so and still fit into the box that society has made for her.
