Courage

What is courage? Who in the story exhibits courage? Explain the situation and how it is courageous.

  1. One person who exhibits courage in this story is Atticus. Courage means facing a situation wthout. Atticus showed courage by taking Tom Robinsons case. Atticus knew that the odds were against him and Tom but he tried his hardest anyway. Even though most of the country had racism and segregation Atticus still fought, to what many people thought he would win. That is why Atticus showed courage.

  2. Courage is when you do something no matter what other people have to say about it. Also, when you do something taht the rest does not do, and just being brave. In the story, Atticus exhibits courage because he is defending a black man in court. Most people look down upon this because of the racism. However, Atticus doesnt care. He does it because this is what he believes in. No matter how much people looked down on him and talked about him, he still decides to defend tom.

  3. Courage is standing up what you believe in no matter who or what is standing in the way. Atticus is a example of a person who has courage in this story. Atticus has courage in this story because he believes that blacks are mistreated and represented a black man in court even know everyone else was racist.

  4. Courage is the ability to continue on with what you know is right and what you believe in no matter what the odds or costs. Its being able to stand up and speak against others to voice your opinion. Courage is being able to stand up against the odds no matter how great. and Atticus exibits much of this during the trial.

  5. Courage is to do the right thing nomater what other people think. Atticus is a good example of corage because he supports blacks in a prejudice town. this is why atticus is a good example of courage.Kevin A.

  6. Courage is doing the right thing even thought it might be hard to do. In the story Atticus shows courage. He shows this by being the lawyer of Tom Robinson. He knew that everyone was against them and he had to work hard to win this case. So many people in the society were racist and were not on his side. Through out the book he is very brave and courageous with everything he does. Atticus believed that Tom was innocent even though no one else did. This is how Atticus shows courage in To Kill a Mockingbird.

  7. Atticus shows courage because he stands up for Tom Robinson and everyone thinks he is guilty because he is black but Atticus thinks that everyone is equal and Tom should have a fair trial. Also, Everyone is mad at Atticus for standing up for Tom and at the bus stop Bob Ewell spits on Atticus and says that he will get him.

  8. Courage is when you have the strength to do the right thing that you feel is right. In order to be courageouse you have to have the right spirit. For example: Tom Robinson,he is very courageouse. He knows that the right thing to do is to not blame Mayella about everything, he is not egger to get her in trouble. He is also, couragouse becasue he is able to say the truth in court. Thats not easy.It takes alot to have courage and i feel that Tom RObinson has met all of those goals.

  9. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is a great example of courage. The way Atticus faces every one and stands for Tom Robinson at court is very courageous. Atticus does what’s right and doesn’t care what anyone says. For example, when he was at the bus stop, Mr. Ewell came up to him and was cussing him and he spit in his face, but all Atticus did was wipe it off his face, and didn’t fight back. Atticus did what was right and he didn’t care about what other people thought about him, that’s true courage.

  10. I think that courage is when some stands up for what they believe in and do something that no one else would do. I think that Atticus is courages because he stands up for Tom Robinson and deffends him in court. Back then it would be outrages to deffend a black man, But Atticus Finch did it. That is why i think that Atticus is courages.

  11. Courage means to do somthing no matter what other people say about it. One person in this story that shows Courage is Atticus. Atticus shows courage because during the trail, he was really trying to defend Tom Robinson even when the people tried to beat him up the night before the trail. Another person who shows courage is Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson shows courage when he is sitting up on the witness stand when he knows people dont like him because he is a Negero. Finally, another person who shows Courage in this book is Scout. Scout shows courage when she stands up to the people who try to beat up Atticus the night before T om Robinsons trail. This is why Atticus, Tom Robinson, and Scout show Courage in the book, To Kill A Mockingbird

  12. Courage is what you bleive in and it doesnt matter what others think of it. A person who showed courage is Atticus he showed courage once by he stood up to all the whites when they tried to kill Tom Rodsion in jail. Also he showed courage by defending a black men in court and fought just as hard as he would with a white men, because he isnt racist to black people. Thats why Atticus is a good example of courage.

  18. Courage is when someone has the bravery and guts to do something that they normally don’t do, do something that nobody would think that person would do. Atticus shows courage throughout the book To Kill a Mockingbird. One example of Atticus showing courage is when he shoots the mad dog. This shows courage because he was put in an element he has not been in for a long time but goes through with it. Atticus shows courage when he took Tom Robinson’s trial. Atticus knew that he wasn’t going to win but he still went through with it because he had to try the best that he could. Another way Atticus shows courage is when Mr. Bob Ewell “cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him.” All Atticus did was stroll away from him. These are some of the many ways Atticus shows courage throughout To Kill a Mockingbird. Talkative202

  19. Courage is mental or moral strength to venture, preserve, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.Atticus exhibits courage in the story. Even though he is being called names and having the names affect his family he is still doing the right thing, defending Tom Robinson.

  20. I agree with sally because Atticus shows courage by being nice to the black people. This is courageous because he is a white person and he knows he will be beat because he is representing the black community in the trial. If Atticus looses he will be made fun of for representing the black people but also for being beat.

  22. Atticus exhibits courage because when bob Ewell spit in his face Atticus just walked away in stead of fighting. This shows courage because of Atticus taking the insult it shows that he is the bigger man. This shows courage because he shows bob and the people of Maycomb that he is not scared of bob. He also shows courage because he just walked away after getting spat on showing that he won’t stoop to his level. He also shows courage because he says that just because you carry a gun doesn’t mean that you are courageous. That is how Atticus shows courage in To Kill a Mockingbird.

  24. Courage is an act of showing that you are not afraid to do what you believe is right. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch shows a lot of courage. He believes in defending Tom Robinson and he believes that he is innocent. Even when the angry mobs came for both him and Tom Robinson, he still defended him. It is courageous because Tom and Atticus were in serious danger and Atticus still decided to help Tom, despite any physical and/or mental risk he would or still may face. This is why and how Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird is courageous.

  29. Courage, in my opinion, is when you stand up for someone in a situation that the person cannot handle. In the story, Atticus shows courage by defending Tom Robinson in court. Because Atticus is White and Robinson is black, Atticus is given a problem by other people in Maycomb. Another example is when Heck Tate goes to tell Atticus that the Jailhouse Gang might go to lynch Tom Robinson. This shows courage of Heck because if the other gang found out, they might go after Heck. These are examples of courage in the book.

  30. Courage in this book is Atticus. He has courage because he is the attorney for a black person. Also he has courage because everyone is calling him a nigger lover and making of his kids because he is tom’s attorney. Another reason he has courage is because he is sticking up for a black man in front of all the racists in the attorney. That is how courage is displayed in To Kill a Mockingbird.

  32. A lot of people show courage. However, the person who showed it the most was Atticus. He showed it in many ways. One way is when he defended Tom Robinson. He had a lot of courage to do that because he knows that he will get called names like, “nigger-lover”. He took the names and had them bring his courage up, it didn’t bring him down. Another way he shows it is when the gangs come he doesn’t back down, he stands up for himself and fights back. Not in a physical way though, he did it through words. Atticus is by far the most courageous character in the book, To Kill a Mocking Bird.

  33. Courage is doing what you know is right even though it is hard to do. I think Atticus shows alot of Courage because he defends Tom Robinson in court and in that time it took alot of courage to defend a black man even talking to the black man took alot of courage.

  34. Courage is standing up for yourself and others. Atticus exhibits courage in the book. One way he shows courage is that he wants to take Tom Robinson's case. This shows that Atticus has courage because back then people didn't see blacks as equals. Instead they thought they were below whites, and to help or even be in relation with them was considered not right. So by Atticus taking the case he stood up for Tom, and really wanted to show people he was inoccent.

  35. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, even when others think your views are wrong. Tom Robinson showed courage by telling the facts to Judge Taylor and the jury. People were against him not because of what he said in court, but because he was black. He was courageous for standing up for himself.

  36. Courage is facing a difficult situation with strength and faith. Many characters show courage in To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus shows courage when he defends Tom Robinson in court. Atticus put himself and his family in danger by taking this case, but he accepted his duty and tried his hardest to help Robinson. Atticus also shows courage when Bob Ewell threatens him after the trial. Instead of getting angry and causing a fight, Atticus simply walked away. Another character that shows courage in this book is Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Dubose knew she was dying, but she still kept strong while Jem was reading to her. She didn’t break down and ruin her last days; she kept strong and listened to Jem’s stories.

  37. Courage is the ability to perform the appropriate actions in a situation even when the opinions of others are considered. Atticus shows courage when he decides to take on the task of defending Tom Robinson. He understands the fact that many of the Maycomb townspeople are going to disapprove of his actions, but he knows that it is the right thing to do. He tried his best to win this case even when many of the white people were disgusted of him to do this. He also shows courage when he was with Tom Robinson at the Jailhouse. The infuriated racist farmers were going to beat Atticus to get through to Tom, and Atticus, aware of the situation, stood his ground and did not let his fears dictate his actions. With the help of the children, these actions paid off in the long run. Courage plays a big part in the theme of this novel.

  38. The person that exhibits courage is Atticus. The reason why Atticus shows courage is by defending Tom Robinson in court. This takes courage because since Atticus is white it takes a lot for a white man to defend a colored person, in those days. Courage means that he or she can face the fears without thinking what other people would think of it.

  39. Courage is standing up for what you believe in. One person in the story who is couragous is Atticus. He is couragous because even though the majority of the town thinks he shouldn't stand up for Tom Robinson he still does because he thinks its the right thing to do. People have started to look at him differently in town. (in a bad way.) As you can see Atticus exhibits courage throughout the story.

  42. Courage is having the strength to stand for what you believe in or to do something good that might be hard to do. In this story, Atticus exhibits courage because he goes to court and stands up for Tom Robinson even though other people look down on him for representing a black man. It is very courageous because people at this time were very racist. Also, Atticus could be in danger because people might go after him because he is standing up for and trying to help a black man.

  45. Courage to me is a person doing something right that is difficult to do. Atiicus Finch shows courage because he is defending a black man. Not only is it his job but, he actually wants to represent Tom Robinson. In the story there is a part where a mob tries to get Tom Robinson and kill him. Greatfully Atticus was there making sure nothing would happen to him. Many people in Maycomb critsise Jem, Scout, and Atticus because of what he is doing. Atticus knows what is right and is trying to show the town that black folks are not what they think they are. This is why I think Atticus shows the most courage in this story.

  48. Courage is doing something that you think may be scary, or when you don’t know what the result will be. One person who has a lot of courage is Tom Robinson. One reason I believe he has a lot of courage is that he went before a large crowd in court. This must have been very scary for him, because many of the people in the jury had unfair thoughts about him because he was black. Also, he has a lot of courage because he was able to tell his side of the story to the court, in which he claimed Mayella had come on to him rather than him raping her, even though he knew that almost no one in the jury would believe his story. Tom Robinson has a lot of courage.

Scout really did not know why they were there but, she had a conversation with Mr. Cunningham. She made him remember that he has kids to and if he were Atticus he would not want his kids watch Tom Robinson get lynched either. That is what I think courage means and that is why I think Scout has courage.

  52. One person in the story who shows a tremendous amount of courage is Atticus. Rascism has a huge effect on everyone and even though it was obvious to Atticus that it would be extremely hard to win, he still went into court and faught for Tom Robinson. 53. In my opinion courage is when you stand up for what you belive in. In this story Atticus shows courage. He shows courage by defending Tom Robinson in trial against Mayalla Ewell. She stated that he raped her and even though the evidence shows that he did not he knew the jury would not find him not guilty. He puts the same amount of energy into the trial as if it was a white man. He also shows courage because he tried to stop the lynching mob. That is how Atticus shows courage.

  54. Courage is doing what is right even though it may be hard. One character that shows courage is Scout. That night when Atticus was at the jail where Tom Robinson was being kept. When the lynching mobb came Scout wanted nothing to happen to Atticus. She was dealing with many drunk men at the same time. She at first thought Mr. Cunningham was their friend. She was trying to make conversation with him. Cut she would not catch on that they were coming to the jail to get Tom Robinson. Scout is a small child who stuck up to many men who were dangerous. This situation was a problem that a little kid normally would not get into.

  55. Courage is standing up to something or someone even if others don’t agree with you. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus is very courageous. The people of Maycomb do not think that he should be the lawyer for Tom Robinson. They do not think so because he was black. The town is very racist and doesn’t care how nice you are. It’s all about the color of your skin. A bunch of “gangs” came to the house and the jail cell. They tell Atticus that he should just give up because there is no way he can win. Tom Robinson is black and blacks never win because they are looked upon as bad in society. Tom Robinson is a great guy and doesn’t try to cause any harm at all. By the way he spoke in the trial you could tell he was a gentleman. Atticus stood up for Tom in every way possible. Although the town didn’t agree with what Atticus was doing, he stuck with the case and gave it his best shot anyways. Atticus a man who sticks to what he believes and even if it means because talk crap about him or look down upon him he doesn’t care. He is couragous because although he doesn't jump into a burning building to save someone, he has to stand up and tell the jury what happened knowing that eventhough he is telling the truth, he will probable be put in jail or linched. This makes her courageous because she had to control herself when others bothered her. Scout shows courage in this book.

  76. I think Dolphus Raymond shows courage. He does this because he marries a black woman and he leaves all of his families plans for him
& their money behind. If he had just stayed with his family he would still be a rich man married to a nice white woman with no problems. But he took the chance of marrying a black woman. I think this shows great courage because people lost respect for him & he went against his families plans for him. I think that it taked great courage to stand up for what you believe in. 77. In To Kill a Mockingbird By Harper Lee, Atticus’ definition of courage is “Courage is not a person with a gun in their hands, it is a person who is licked one hundred years before they still try to win.” This is probably the best way to explain courage because most people think that it is the other way around. Atticus has courage in the story when he stands out side the jail so they would not hurt Tom Robinson (his client). This is courage because he new that they would probably beat him up but he still stood up for what was right.

Even though he is afraide he difends tom simply because it's what he believes in. If your never afraide your not brave you just stupid. 80. Courage is having integrity and doing what is right even when it is very difficult. There were many people in "To Kill a Mocking Bird." Atticus was couragous enough to stand up for Tom Robinson in the court and in the jailhouse. He always did what he thought was right, and never let anyone pressure him into doing otherwise. He was always couragous since he didn't start fights when people made fun of him or tried to get him not to defend Robinson.
Another person who had courage was Mrs. Dubose since she knew that she was going to die one way or another and it would be much easier to die without breaking her addiction, but she still did it. Tom Robinson also had courage since he helped and was nice to Mayella even though he knew he could have gotten in trouble.
Unfortunately, many people in the book didn't recognize these couragous people as couragous. Most people thought that Atticus was being horrible by helping Tom Robinson. Hardly anyone considered him couragous for doing this great act, even his own sister. There were people who did things that they could have gotten in trouble for that they thought was right, but, by our standards at least, weren't right. One example of this was Bob Ewell who lied in front of the court and did many other horrible things and didn't care what trouble he could've gotten into or what others thought of him. But this was not couragous, just really mean. This shows how different people may think that they are couragous, when they're not. And people may not think someone is being couragous, when they are. But in my opinion, Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Tom Robinson were very couragous.

  81. Courage is someone who tries and never gives up even knowing they might get beat. Atticus shows a lot of courage in the story. He defends blacks, and people make fun of him for it. He goes to court defending them. He knows that they got licked a hundred years, but still tries. On the day of the trail he never gives up. This is why Atticus shows courage.

  82. In a way, Tom Robinson exhibits courage as well. He decided to stay in the town and face the jury instead of running away. Any other black man would have ran away and would be afraid of getting lynched. He stayed in Maycomb even though his chances of being lynched were higher. Jake D.

  84. Courage means many things. There is no one definition of courage. Courage could mean running into a burning building to save a trapped child. Or it could mean facing somthing that you know is going to be hard to do and you will probably fail at, but you do it anyways. One person who shows courage in this story is Mrs. Dubbose. She showed the latter definition of courage. She had an addiction and she knew that she was going to have an extremely tough time breaking it, but she did it any ways. It takes a lot of courage to look failure in the face, know that you may not make it, but go down fighting any way. I personally admire Mrs. Dubbose for that even though she was a grumpy, cruel, old lady.

I think that Atticus shows a great deal of courage throughout this story, but especially when the trial rolls around. he is helping out a black man in court and in return is getting ridiculed, threatened, and harrassed. Even his children are made fun of. He put his family on the line just to help out a black man. No other white man would even think of doing this. It takes great courage to be Atticus.

I think that Scout shows a lot of courage because when Atticus is talking to the gang/mob Scout just runs over and talks to Atticus. I also think that Atticus has a lot of courage too because he isn’t afraid of being ridiculed for defending tom Robinson in the trial. Also he isn’t afraid of being nice to black people, he isn’t prejudice like everyone else in town , even his own sister is prejudice.

  89. Another word for courage could be braveness. You could be courageous in a sense of doing a dangerous stunt that could cost your whole life. Also you could be courageous by showing some integrity, by standing for your own opinion and not following what others think. Atticus shows courage by defending Tom Robinson in court even though Tom Robinson is black. Jem also shows some courage by risking his life in trying to see what Boo Radley looks like. Calpurnia shows courage by bringing Jem and Scout to her congregation.

  96. Courage to me is doing what is right even though others may not seem to agree. Atticus is a significant example of courage in To Kill a Mockingbird. He is a great example, because even though everyone thought that Atticus was crazy and wrong for representing Tom Robinson, he still tried his hardest and gave it his all. He treated it like any other case, even though he was defending a colored man. I also found it courageous of him to go to the jail that Tom was at because of Heck Tate’s warning. Later on in the book we find out that he didn’t carry a gun or weapon on him when he went, which most people would have, which shows that he was quite brave. Another person I found that displayed courage was Mrs. Dubose. I find her so inspiring, because she knew she had an addiction, but she fought hard to resist it and in the end died. One issue was that two different ganges confronted Atticus about how he is just defending a black who is worthless. When these gangs were confronting Atticus he could have been very badely harmed, but wasn't because Jem, Scout, and Dill came and stepped in.Also Atticus shows courage becuase he belives that Tom didn't comitt the crime and he had to have alot of courage to stand up for a black person. This is why i belive that Atticus Finch shows alot of courage.

  133. In To Kill a Mockingbird there are way too many examples of courage to list. But one that I would like to point out is the fact that Atticus is defending a black man. This is courage to me because in the 1930’s racism was VERY common. But what wasn’t common is for a white man to defend a black man and this is exactly what Atticus Finch was doing. The dangers Atticus has to face is not just only physical but mental to! What I mean by this is that in one point in the book a whole gang came to lynch Tom and Atticus stood up for him even though they could have hurt him extremely bad. One example of mental dangers is the names and threats he gets called. Such as the point when Mr. Ewell spit on him and told him that he’d get him if it took him the rest of his life. One last example of mental danger is when how people is how Scouts cousin and Mrs. Dubose call him a “nigger” lover. Atticus shows true courage to be able to withstand these dangers

  134. Courage is the strength to stand up for what you think is right. Atticus is a character who exhibits a lot of courage! He is defending Tom Robinson, a black man, who was said to have rapped Myella Ewell. Atticus is so courageous because this is an extremely racist time period and blacks were considered the lowest in society at this time, they were even considered lower than the white trash Ewells. Blacks were often convicted with crimes they never did and no white people really cared at all. Many of the town’s people are very racist and don’t think Atticus should be defending a black man. Mr. Ewell came up to Atticus, spat in his face, swore at him, and threatened to kill Atticus for defending Tom! He was also confronted twice by two different mobs! It takes real courage to stand up for what you think is right, and that’s just what Atticus is doing!

  135. There were a few courageous characters in this story. One very courageous character was Mrs. Dubose. She had a terrible morphine addiction and she knew she was not going to live much longer. She wanted to die drug free. Everyday she would do her best to keep her mind off of drugs. Another brave character was Tom Robinson. He went into court and told his side of the story. He stood up for himself in a room full of people who hated him. He stuck to his story and told the truth. Both of these characters were extremely courageous.

  136. To me, courage is fighting for what you believe in, despite what others say. One character in the story that exhibits courage is Atticus. Atticus shows courage when he agrees to take Tom Robinson’s case. This is seen unacceptable in society during this time period because Robinson is a black man, but Atticus knows in his heart he can’t refuse the case. He knows that Tom Robinson is innocent, and that this is simply a “trial of black and white”. Because of his defending a black man, many of his own neighbors shun him and criticize him behind his back, calling him “n****r lover”. They basically think he is a traitor, and a white man should not defend a black man, who is beneath him. But Atticus refuses to back down from the case. He will not let silly prejudices get in the way of his morals. He will not refuse to defend someone because of skin color.

  137. Nice post Englishstinks407!
It is an important point to make that Atticus was putting himself and his family in danger by defending Tom Robinson. I wonder how many of us would be willing to do the same. That's why I have that sign in my room asking, "What would Atticus do?" He is a terrific role model and a real hero, I think!

  138. In Atticus’ eyes courage isn’t being brave enough to shoot a gun, its being licked all your life and doing something about it. Atticus shows great courage in To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus is so brave that he defended a black man in court even though people in the town of Maycomb would ridicule him for it. Also he took Tom’s case even though he knew that he most likely wouldn’t win the case. He believes that everyone should be created equal and that people shouldn’t be prejudice. Also Scout is brave for running up to Atticus when he was talking to the mob by the jail.

  139. The word “Courage” is demonstrated throughout this story in 2 different ways. The first is a much more common idea of the word. And this is used by Dill, who is up to any dare or prank, no matter how scary it happens to be. Dill was courageous enough to touch the Radley house several times and to lie to Atticus in order to get Jem and Scout out of trouble. The second type of courage is more mental and in your mind than what Dill shows. Atticus demonstrates this courage by taking the Tom Robinson case. He believes that Tom should be free, so he is risking his image in Maycomb, time, and money in an attempt to free Robinson. He once told Jem and Scout that courage is shown not by a gun in your hand. This statement is shown by him and this case.

  140. A person in the story who shows courage in the book is Atticus. He shows courage by taking the case of defending Tom Robinson. It showed courage because he knew that he was going to get criticized a lot by taking this case and the new that the odds were against him but still tried his hardest anyway. An instance when Atticus showed courage was when Mr. Ewell threatened Atticus after the case. Atticus could have made a big deal about it but instead just walked away. Another time were Atticus shows bravery was in the jailhouse, when he went there to defend Tom Robinson from the farmers who came there to kill him That is how Atticus shows bravery in the book.

  141. Courage is doing something no matter the consequence. This is exhibited by both Jem and Scout for they have the courage to go to school each day and face the ridicule they gain from their father’s job. There class mates openly insult and indulge in name calling but still they remain completely lax in appearance. Though they grow anger they never show their feelings to anyone unless they see it fit to restore pride to their family and ingage in a fight.

  143. I think that courage is doing what you think is right regardless of what others think you should do. One person who shows courage in this story is Atticus. He is courageous in defending a black person in court. He knows that Tom is innocent, and he tried to make it right, even though many people judged him and said he shouldn’t. This is very courageous. Another person who had courage was Mrs. Dubose. She was addicted to Morphine and she knew she was going to die. She didn’t want to die as a prisoner to her addiction, so she quit. Atticus and Mrs. Dubose are both very courageous.

  144. Courage is having the bravery to do something you normally wouldn’t do. Someone that is courageous is fearless. I think Mrs. Dubose showed courage throughout Part One of the book. She showed courage when she stopped taking her meds event though it was more painful for her. She had the courage to stop taking her meds so she would die, “beholden to nothing or nobody.” Another person in the book that had courage was Atticus. Atticus showed courage when he took Tom Robinson’s case even though he was black and many people would not agree with him. Atticus and Mrs. Dubose showed courage.
